Our goal is not limited to support and educate the disabled children in our care. Niketan try to raise awareness among the wider public in Bangladesh and make the society more receptive of the needs of disabled people. We do this in our daily work, but we also organize special awareness and advocacy programs in the villages where we operate.
We share our 20 years of experience with partners at local and national level. Also, Niketan is increasingly invited to conferences, workshops and round tables with the government. In doing so, we share our experience, so that more organizations can benefit and use our knowledge in their work all over Bangladesh.
To give the local population and relevant government bodies a better picture of the possibilities of children and young people with severe disabilities, Niketan has created an information video in collaboration with the Bangladeshi partner organization DRRA. The video breaks down taboos and shows that children with complex disabilities can also develop into valued family members and play an active role in society. The video is used at meetings with local authorities and local community meetings organized by DRRA.
From 2014 to 2019, Niketan has invested a lot in developing training courses and teaching methodologies. In 2019, the responsibility for the training program was transferred to the DRRA master trainers. The master trainers are now well equipped – each in their own field of specialization – to provide training courses to young people, parents, supervisors and school teachers.
Because of Niketan’s reputation and experience in providing sex education and reproductive health (SRH) training to disabled youngsters, we have been asked by the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) in Amsterdam to become one of the partners in the NUFFIC – funded project ‘We Care’. In this project, which is about training government health professionals in Bangladesh in the field of SRHR, Niketan will ensure that proper attention will be paid to young people with intellectual disabilities.
