NewsLessons Learnt from a Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Model in Manikganj

We are proud to share the insightful article “Lessons Learnt from a Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Model in Manikganj (Bangladesh)”, written by Els Heijnen, Antoinette Termoshuizen, and Huib Cornielje (member of the Supervisory Board of Enablement foundation).

Although written in 2024, this article remains highly relevant today — offering thoughtful insights into sustainable, community-based rehabilitation approach in a country where national government increasingly invests in professional rehabilitation services but seems to ignore the importance of community services for those who are poor and live far away from services that are offered in urban areas.

Through innovative “veranda schools”, active parent platforms, and dedicated community volunteers, our CBR model has shown how local empowerment, collaboration, and inclusion can transform lives — turning hidden challenges into visible change.

The article dives into:

  • How participatory and rights-based approaches have reshaped community care
  • The vital role of parents and local volunteers in sustaining rehabilitation
  • Lessons on sustainability, effectiveness, and inclusion for future CBR initiatives

This CBR model demonstrates that with a relatively small amount of money but with the commitment from a vibrant community network, much can be achieved.
